What is lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is capturing everyday moments with a candid, fly-on-the-wall approach, to tell a cohesive narrative through imagery in an artistic manner.

Genres like environmental portraiture, classic portraiture and documentary are commonly used for lifestyle photography which is part of the reason why it’s so appealing.

in a nutshell.

For me, wanting to become a photographer was a rather organic experience. I can’t recall when I had decided to pursue photography and make it my life, this is something I have a hard time putting my finger on.

I just knew I really wanted it!

When I was in my 20’s (and a little naive) I established Daina Marie Photography, back in 2013.

This is also the same year I started my Diploma in Photo Imaging at CATC design school in Sydney. I enrolled in my course to better understand my camera, and to work out what the hell an F stop meant and why it is so important.

I kid, I kid, I know what it means…now.

After two years of studying, getting to know my camera inside and out, and gaining a foothold into the proverbial door, I finally graduated with my diploma in 2015. By the time I had graduated I had already landed my first big client, The Leukaemia Foundation, capturing their famous Worlds Greatest Shave and Light the Night events throughout Sydney and the Sutherland shire.

In the beginning I would work with every genre of photography imaginable, and hustled every day to get any job I could. Whether the gig was shooting food or events I didn't mind, nor did I care if it paid well. Sometimes it didn’t pay at all, I just wanted to shoot.

Before long though I secured (paying) contracts with Broadsheet Sydney and Urban Walkabout, and would spend my days shooting with restauranteurs and boutique shop owners. I worked weekends photographing weddings and christenings of my own whilst creating social media content for Navarra Venues – a prestigious wedding venue in Sydney.

As career highlights go, the most memorable for me was when I placed first in the Canon Light awards in 2016. Stemming from that, I was asked to be apart of the Canon Lab experiment – Imagination and to work alongside Canon at VIVID Sydney.

The Canon lab experiment involved 6 photographers (including me) who were hand picked to create content from a brief issued to us by a very unusual client. Watch the 6 min video for yourself if you’d like, and see what it’s all about here. Psst – I’m the one with the owl tattoo who nervously laughs a lot throughout the video.

To date, some of the great clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with are Bondi Pizza, William Grant & Sons, Kraken Rum, White Rabbit Projects, and Airbnb. I’ve also had the opportunity to assist many great photographers like Andreas Smetana and Gary Sheppard, who have provided me with priceless industry knowledge and valuable know-how.

Now, after getting married and travelling what seemed like the whole world for over a year, my husband Oli, our two cats, and little old me, picked up and relocated from Sydney to the coast of Newcastle.

Today, my aim is to continue growing my business, and integrate myself whole heartedly into the creative community throughout the Newcastle and Hunter region. Just as much so, I want to help and support as many other small businesses as I can, through the power of professional photography.
